Vestibular and Proprioceptive: The Two Hidden Senses

A parent-friendly guide to the vestibular and proprioceptive senses: what each does, the signs of seeking or avoiding, and simple play that feeds both.

Ask most people to name their senses and you will hear the familiar five: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. We rely on them all day to make sense of the world. When it comes to how a child moves, balances, and stays settled, though, two quieter senses are doing a great deal of the work behind the scenes.

These are the vestibular and proprioceptive systems. When they are working smoothly, a child can sit still in a chair, catch a ball, and find their way around an obstacle course without much thought. When the signals come through too strongly or too faintly, you often see intense seeking or avoiding that can be mistaken for simple hyperactivity. Here is a plain-English look at both.

The vestibular system

The vestibular system is your sense of balance, movement, and where your head is in space. It lives deep in the inner ear, in tiny fluid-filled canals lined with fine receptors. Every time your child tilts their head, bends to do up a shoe, spins in a circle, or rides a bike, the fluid shifts and those receptors tell the brain how the head is moving, how fast, and in which direction.

It matters because it sits underneath nearly all physical coordination. It helps the eyes stay fixed on a target while the body moves, which is part of reading a line of text or catching a ball, and it helps the body hold an upright posture without tiring quickly.

You might notice two broad patterns:

  • The seeker. This child finds it hard to stay still. They spin, rock, swing hard, hang upside down off the couch, or run at full tilt, because their body seems to want plenty of movement to feel satisfied.
  • The avoider. This child is wary of movement. They may be uneasy on swings or slides, dislike uneven ground, lose their balance easily, or come across as cautious and clumsy.

The proprioceptive system

Where the vestibular system tracks the head and movement, the proprioceptive system tracks the body. It relies on receptors inside the muscles, joints, and ligaments all over the body. Each time a muscle stretches or a joint presses, those receptors tell the brain where the limbs are and how much force the muscles are using. It is what lets you scratch an itch on your back, or walk upstairs, without watching your hands and feet.

It matters because it underpins motor planning, the ability to picture a movement, coordinate the limbs, and carry it out smoothly. It also guides how much force to use, which is the difference between pressing hard enough to write and pressing so hard the pencil tip snaps, or patting a small animal gently rather than too firmly.

When these signals come through faintly, a child’s sense of their own body can feel a little blurry, and they often go looking for strong muscle input to map it out. You might notice them:

  • Crashing into walls, furniture, or other people.
  • Stamping their feet heavily as they walk.
  • Chewing on sleeves, collars, or toys.
  • Breaking toys by accident because they did not gauge how much force they were using.

Supporting both with play

The reassuring part is that you do not need a clinic to feed these senses. A good deal can happen through active indoor play, and many children feel calmer and more settled once they have had a proper dose of the movement their body is asking for.

For a child chasing vestibular input, offer safe ways to change head position and feel some movement. Low, sturdy climbing pieces, balance boards, and gentle ramps all work well. Rolling down a soft wedge or wobbling along an unstable beam gives the inner ear a concentrated, safe helping of the input it is looking for.

For a child who is crashing and stamping, lean into heavy work, the pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying that puts steady effort through the muscles. Soft modular foam pieces are handy here, because building a fort or tunnel means lifting and stacking the pieces, and crawling snugly through the finished structure gives that firm, grounding pressure that helps a blurry body map feel clear again.

When you stop reading spinning, crashing, and jumping as misbehaviour and start seeing them as a body looking for input, you can set up a home that meets both senses, and give your child the building blocks for confidence, coordination, and calm.
